Why Should We Hope, Here & Now?

There is reason to hope at all times.

Hope is not bound to the limited time, space, or circumstances of the present moment. Hope is revealed and fulfilled in eternity - an eternity that can be perceived in the present through our faith in God:

“We firmly believe that God is master of the world and of its history… Only at the end, when our partial knowledge ceases, when we see God ‘face to face,' will we fully know the ways by which – even through the dramas of evil and sin – God has guided his creation to that definitive sabbath rest for which he created heaven and earth.” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, no. 314)

Just as a note in a song does not determine its melody nor a word on a page convey a full story, finite moments in time cannot on their own contain the fullness of what is prepared for us. If an artist can be trusted to weave a lonely brushstroke into a landscape and a chef trusted to balance the flavor of a sour taste, how much more can we trust God to save us from the ugliest and heartbreaking moments of sin we encounter, witness, and commit.

Seeing It In Scripture

In the first reading for the First Sunday of Lent (Deuteronomy 26:6-9), Moses reminds the Israelites:

“When the Egyptians maltreated and oppressed us… we cried to the LORD… and he heard our cry... He brought us out of Egypt… he gave us this land flowing with milk and honey.”

God desires to lead us to a land ‘flowing with milk and honey,’ and we can place our hope in God who is worthy of trust, who is stronger than any adversary. Even in the storms of life, God does not abandon us. He offers us sufficient graces in times of trial, whether it is a companion to help us carry our cross, supernatural forgiveness, the ability to recognize our radical need for Him, endurance in the faith, humility, or a share in His wounds.

The psalmist reveals God’s faithfulness:

“He shall call upon me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in distress; I will deliver him and glorify him” (Psalms 91:15).

The Lord who transcends time and space, the Maker of the universe, who is above all and knows all, chooses to love us fiercely beyond all comprehension. He makes good on His promises. When we call and wait on Him, we never wait in vain. We can expect good things from Him who saves us.
