Guest Information
Virginia Mata, Ph.D., is a proud daughter of San Antonio’s West Side, one of eleven children, and a lifelong witness to the challenges and the resilience of her community. A retired Navy Reserve Lieutenant Commander and retired Federal Probation Officer, she has dedicated her life to serving others, serving her country, accompanying individuals impacted by the criminal justice system, and experiencing and witnessing firsthand the human consequences of social and systemic inequities.
Virginia currently serves as the Director of Respect Life and Social Justice Ministries for the Archdiocese of San Antonio, where she equips, forms, and accompanies ministry leaders, parish communities, and individuals in living out the Gospel through missionary discipleship.
She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Texas Tech University, a Master of Public Administration from The University of Texas at San Antonio, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Organizational Leadership with a focus on faith-based community organizing from the University of the Incarnate Word.
Drawing upon her leadership, scholarship, and lifelong commitment to service, Virginia works to build communities rooted in Catholic Social Teaching, foster servant leaders, and accompany people of faith as they become missionary disciples who transform their parishes, neighborhoods, and society.

- 8:00 a.m. Outdoor Care for Creation Mass at Mission Espada with Archbishop Gustavo
- 9:15 a.m. Pilgrimage led by Archbishop Gustavo to Mission San Juan (wear comfortable shoes and bring your refillable water bottle)
- 10:00 a.m. Arrival at Mission San Juan followed by remarks and a blessing from Archbishop Gustavo
- Transportation will be provided
