A prayer I pray very often is a prayer of petition to the Holy Spirit; I pray especially to be granted the gifts of Wisdom, Understanding, and Knowledge. Traveling on pilgrimage with Pilgrim Center of Hope truly made the outpouring of these special gifts present in my life.

Guided by the spiritual understanding and knowledge by Deacon Tom and Mary Jane Fox, as well as their team, allowed me as a member of the ministerial priesthood of our Lord Jesus Christ to truly gain a new found wisdom of the life, ministry, passion, death, and resurrection of our Savior. To walk, meditate, pray, and celebrate the Sacred Liturgies where I Lord lived and breathed, loved and forgave, have allowed me to gain an insight into my faith that I could have never imagined.

– Fr. Steven’s testimony after Holy Land pilgrimage with PCH

Father Steven Anthony Gamez was born at the Nix Hospital in downtown San Antonio. His father Jose Salazar Gamez was born in Kyle, Texas and his mother Cruz Gloria Cevallos Gamez was born and raised in San Antonio. He is the third of four children, including his eldest sister Monica, older brother Jose and younger sister Erika. He graduated from John Jay High School in San Antonio in 1990 and soon after graduation joined the United States Navy. He served aboard the U.S.S. Pioneer MCM-9 Avenger-class mine countermeasures ship, and after the Navy used his military benefits (G.I. Bill) to attend Santa Fe Community College and eventually completed an Associates of Applied Science in semi-conductor manufacturing in 1997.

Concerning his vocation to the priesthood, he first approached his parish priest at Resurrection of the Lord Catholic Church who counseled him and put him in contact with the vocation director for the Archdiocese of San Antonio in 1998. Father Steven eventually began his official seminary training in August of 2000 at Holy Trinity Seminary in Dallas, Texas, and graduated from the University of Dallas in 2002 with a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and Letters. He then moved back to San Antonio to begin his master’s degree studies at Assumption Seminary and Oblate School of Theology and graduated with a Masters of Divinity in May 2008. He was ordained a priest May 17, 2008 at San Fernando Cathedral by the Most Reverend Jose Gomez and named Pastor of St. Philip of Jesus Church in 2011, administrator of St. Henry Church in 2014, and administrator of St. Benedict Church in 2016. Leaving the three parishes, on July 1, 2016 he became pastor of St. Rose of Lima Church.
