Why the Crucifix?

Why the Crucifix?

Why do Catholics use, wear, and display crucifixes if Jesus has resurrected from the dead? Listen in as Deacon Tom and Mary Jane Fox discuss this popular question.

Catholicism Live! was a weekly series connecting issues of the faith and Church teachings to daily life produced by Pilgrim Center of Hope from 2000-2019.

Catholic Women’s Conference – An Introduction

Why does Pilgrim Center of Hope (PCH) present the Catholic Women’s Conference (CWC) each year? Why is CWC so relevant today?

Join PCH Co-Founder & Co-Director Mary Jane Fox and event organizer Nan Balfour as they talk about the origins of CWC. They will share about the forethought, planning, and prayer that goes into selecting relevant topics and securing dynamic speakers year after year.

As part of this special presentation – leading up to CWC 2018 – Mary Jane and Nan will spoke with two previous conference attendees who have been enlightened, encouraged, and transformed by their CWC experiences: One a wife and mother, who was inspired to teach catechism at her parish and Catholic homeschool her four children; the other a licensed professional counselor whose marriage and professional life have been refreshed as the result of CWC.

Some of the topics of discussion include:

  • The main reason for founding CWC – to bring a message of hope to women
  • How CWC helps women cope with many family, financial and societal burdens that are placed on them
  • How women have been healed, renewed, reconciled and given spiritual direction
  • The goal to provide spiritual tools that teach, encourage, and challenge women to be exactly who God created them to be
  • The overall mission of leading women to discover and learn about their true personal dignity in God

Spa for A Woman’s Soul

Hear from dynamic speakers who share their messages of hope.

The following served as a preview of  the 2018 annual Catholic Women’s Conference (CWC). Nan Balfour, events coordinator at Pilgrim Center of Hope (PCH) spoke with two of the featured speakers at this year’s conference:

  • Award-winning Catholic author Colleen C. Mitchell, whose speaking topics were When We Were Eve, Uncovering the Woman God Created You to Be and Who Does he Say You Are? Women Transformed by Christ in the Gospels, the titles of her two books. Colleen will speak about how she strives to provide guidance to women who are searching for answers and seeking to find their identity in Christ.
  • Convert and surfer priest Fr. Donald Calloway, MIC – bestselling author of Champions of the Rosary: The History and Heroes of a Spiritual Weapon, whose life was changed forever after reading about Our Lady of Medjugorje. He spoke on Mary and the Mystery of Femininity and The Rosary: Spiritual Sword of Mary. Fr. Calloway says women have much to learn from the Virgin Mary. Father’s talk helped women to better understand their femininity with a focus on family-life, the workplace, and all other relationships.

This program will also touch on how CWC as a ‘Spa for the Soul,’ strives to provide women with the spiritual tools that teach, encourage, and challenge women to be exactly who God created them to be.

Securing Our Future

Why are so many young Catholics leaving the Faith? Who are the injured, the drifters, and the dissenters?

Join Fr. Ed Hauf, OMI for a thought-provoking discussion on how to best minister to our youth and young adults in today’s society. This topic is of upmost importance  for the Church, both locally and around the world, namely the vital task we all have of helping to secure the future of the Church by making sure we are ministering to and meeting the needs of the next generation.

Special guest will be Daniel Oubre, the Associate Director of the Office for Parish Life in the Archdiocese of San Antonio.

Church leaders have recognized the importance of listening to and meeting the needs of young adults as they grow up in this totally secular culture. Pope Francis has called upon the leaders of those immersed in youth ministry to initiate a true and honest dialogue to bring Christ into the lives of our youth.

Fr. Ed and Mr. Oubre will share some recent data from the Pew Research Center that shows that the number of young Americans who are no longer religiously affiliated has increased dramatically in recent years. Seventy-four-percent of the sample population of this study said they left the faith between the ages of 10 and 20. It seems from the study that this disaffiliation from the Church is largely a thoughtful, conscious, intentional choice made by young people in a secularized society where faith and religious practice are seen as one option among many.

Pilgrimages – Journeys of Faith

What is a pilgrimage? And what makes that pilgrimage an authentic spiritual journey?

Join Deacon Tom & Mary Jane Fox – co-founders and directors of Pilgrim Center of Hope –  as they share their 30-years of experience leading customized journeys of faith to the Holy Land, Italy, and to the sites in Portugal, France and Mexico where our Blessed Mother appeared.

Whether you are considering going on an international pilgrimage – or simply want to hear their description of what it means to be on pilgrimage or to be a pilgrim people, you will want to listen.

The Foxes have been prayerfully conducting pilgrimages since 1984. They have visited the Holy Land over 50-times and offered their spiritual direction to thousands of pilgrims seeking a journey of hope. For many of the pilgrims, these journeys have led them into authentic discipleship and transformation both individually and collectively.

Hear about all the moments of grace along the way, including the testimony of one pilgrim, whose life has been forever-changed by the experience. They will describe how going on an authentic spiritual journey is like walking into the Scriptures, engaging all the senses…truly connecting heaven and earth!

Reflections on the Eucharist

How much do you really know about the Eucharist?

Join Fr. Ed Hauf, OMI, as he unravels the nature of the Sacrament of the Eucharist; it’s importance in our lives and how we need to not only adore and receive the Eucharist, but also live it in our lives.

Staying Close to God

Do you need a ‘refresher’ on prayer? Why did Jesus pray? Join Deacon Tom and Mary Jane Fox as they discuss how we can stay close to God in this busy and efficiency-minded world.

What Is Divine Mercy & Why Is It Important Today?

We all need to be familiar with The Divine Mercy because the keys to a more enriched spiritual life lie in the details of the story.

During this program, we will explain and answer several important questions:

  • Who  was Sister Maria Faustina Kowalska and what is her relationship to The Divine Mercy?
  • What is The Divine Mercy message and devotion?
  • What does Church Teaching and Sacred Scripture says about God’s Mercy?
  • What is the Feast of Divine Mercy?
  • Why is Divine Mercy important today?

Men of Faith & Courage

What does it mean to be an authentic Catholic man? What are some tools we can use to help men’s spiritual growth?

Join Father Ed Hauf, OMI, as he ‘turns the table’ as host this week, with guests Deacon Tom Fox and Richard Reyna. We’ll share our knowledge and experiences on this subject from decades of ministry, and of course, our lives as men. PLUS! Get spiritual tools and meet our Saint of the Week, Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati – a young man of faith & courage.

Aging with Grace

Our society does anything but value aging. “Anti-aging” is more than a facial cream or a hair product; it’s a widespread attitude. What does our faith say about aging, besides our need to respect the elderly? What is our calling as we age?

Did you know that senior citizens are the subject of many of Pope Francis’ messages?

Catholicism Live! was a weekly program produced by Pilgrim Center of Hope from the early 2000s until 2019.
